Philippians is a love letter written to a church that loved and provided for the man who brought the gospel to them. Even though in prison, Paul encourages the church to serve God honestly and joyfully and offers himself as an example of Christian living in adversity.
Introduction
The beginning place of study in any New Testament book
is to present background material that will help a person to
understand the message of the book. So it is with the epistle to
the Philippians. The city of Philippi, its history, and the
establishment of the church, as recorded in the book of Acts 16,
will be studied. An overview of the epistle of Paul to the
Philippians is appropriate. The following points will be noted
in the beginning of the study: the occasion of the writing of the
letter, Paul’s purpose in writing, and some of the characteristics
of the church in Philippi as revealed in the letter and in other
scriptures in the New Testament.
